AGM 2023

22/4/2023

On Tuesday 4th of April 2023, the committee and representatives from each team of the Lowestoft League gathered together to discuss the successes of the last year of netball.

It was with sadness that Chair Sharon announced the passing of Debbie Parker who unfortunately lost her long battle with cancer.  Debbie was a dedicated and loyal player for Wasps and also playing for Sapphire.  She was dependable and had to choose between her two passions, Netball and being a season ticket holder for Norwich City FC.  She often played Wing Defence, although would play any position to help out. When there were any social events Debbie was always in attendance.  Her other passions had been nature, walking, music, theatre and had a large circle of friends.  Debbie will be truly missed by all the netball community, especially Wasps and Belton.

Finances were discussed by Treasurer Lorraine. League umpires were thanked for their efforts over the last year, especially those who are in training, mentors and those who stepped up to cover last minute fixtures. If anyone would like to become an umpire, please speak to any of our umpires or committee Umpiring Secretary Eleanor.

Netball Tournament - 13th November

24/11/2022

Cliff Park Netball Club organised and hosted a Robins vs All netball tournament on Sunday 13th November to raise funds for their club.

The tournament was organised by Cliff Park Netball Club member and Robins player Erin Price, ably assisted by her fellow team members.

5 teams played at Cliff Park Ormiston Academy in Gorleston, made up of club members, family and friends. It was open to all and included partners, kids, mums and dads who all got the opportunity to battle against the Cliff Park Robins team who were ultimately unbeatable!

The 5 teams played against each other in a round robin format, stopping for a 2 minute silence in honour of Remembrance Sunday. The games continued throughout the morning with a lunch break at midday giving everyone a chance to enjoy some delicious cakes which were kindly baked and donated. In the afternoon, the teams competed for the final positions in play off games with Robins coming out on top.

Erin, alongside coaches Barbara and Steve Rogers collected everyone together for an end of tournament presentation and medal ceremony and flowers presented to Erin for her hard work. Players, spectators, cake bakers, umpires and sponsors Dolphin Fish Bar were thanked for their efforts and support.

It was a great day getting everyone involved in netball and raising important funds for Cliff Park Netball Club.”

Lyn Elvin Charity Netball Tournament

11/11/2022

On the 4th of September 2022, 15 teams attended a tournament in honour of Lyn Elvin who sadly passed away after a long illness in 2019. Lyn was very involved with netball being a player, umpire and Norfolk Committee volunteer.

Many teams entered from places as far as Salisbury, Colchester and Fiji and had a fun day packed with netball. Hustlers we’re awarded as the cup winners and Tru7 Hawks as the plate winners. Hustlers ladies were serving army personnel and friends with Lyn and Sophie Pike from their SunSport weekend trips to Spain.

We were joined by Lyns mum, dad, husband, sister and Lyns daughter Lois. Our thanks extend to organiser Shelley James for putting together a great day!

Walking netball helps people to reignite their passion for the sport

It’s a chance to dust off those trainers, get back onto court and play the sport you love at a slightly slower pace.
And that’s exactly what the 20 or so members of the Gorleston walking netball group have been doing, although for some remembering to walk instead of run has been a little harder than anticipated.
The sessions, open to people from Great Yarmouth, Lowestoft, Beccles and beyond, are designed to offer a way back into netball for those who were forced to stop playing competitively due to an injury, or perhaps decided to hand in their bib as they got a little older.
There are now eight walking netball sessions offered throughout Norfolk, with 22-year-old Libby Gates behind the group that meets every Saturday morning at Gorleston’s Lynn Grove Academy.
Miss Gates, who plays, coaches and umpires netball matches, initially led a one-off session in Beccles last year to gauge the interest, and now offers the chance to train and play each week.
She said: “It’s aimed at those who are over 50 who used to play netball to give them a way back into it and also those who are looking for something new to try. There’s a good social side to it too.
“It’s been going really well, the ladies all love it and I really enjoy running it.
“Some of the ladies have struggled with the new rules, especially not being able to jump which is difficult for the defenders, but they are all getting the hang of it.
“We’ve got a walking netball tournament coming up soon which we have entered a team in too, so that will give them the chance to play competitively.”
Clare King, 49, from Oulton Broad, stopped playing netball after needing a knee replacement.

She said: “It’s difficult not to run and jump when you’ve been used to playing that way for years, but it’s really good fun and we are all getting used to it.
“It’s a really friendly group and I think the social side brings a lot of people out as well.”
Anyone interested in joining is welcome to pop along to the Lynn Grove session, which runs from 10am to 11am each Saturday.
Rules of walking netball

There are four main differences in the rules for walking netball to how the sport is normally played.
1/ You are only allowed to walk, no running is allowed.
2/ Players must have one foot in contact with the court at all times, so no jumping to intercept the ball.
3/ You are allowed one extra second with the ball, meaning a player has four seconds to release it instead of the usual three.
4/ An extra step may be taken once a player has received the ball, which reduces the impact on landing and improves the momentum of the game.
Teams still consist of seven players - goal shooter, goal attack, wing attack, centre, wing defence, goal defence and goal keeper.
And players defending the ball must still stand at least 3ft away from their opponent, with a penalty pass awarded if you obstruct your player.
Where to play

Walking Netball sessions are currently being run at eight venues across Norfolk, with plans in the pipeline for more locations in the future.
• City College, Norwich, Monday from 6pm to 7pm.
• Watton Sports Centre, Tuesday from 1.15pm to 2.15pm.
• Bob Carter Centre, Wednesday from 12-1pm.

• Lynn Grove Academy, Saturday from 10am to 11am.
